Auburn-Lewiston, Maine Lewiston-Auburn was once the nation's leading shoe manufacturer. During the Civil War, they shoed practically the whole Union Army. But as the all-too-familiar story goes, the times caught up to the Twin Cities. But none of that gets these residents down, many of them French-Canadian stock. They are proud to tell anyone who will listen that Money magazine rated their urban area one of the 300 "most livable" in the country. The cities are also home to several colleges, most prominent among them Bates College. Students call their environs "The Bates Bubble." With its small-town feel and the cool mountain air of Maine, it must be true that Lewiston-Auburn feels like its own little world.
