Belgrade, the heart of the Belgrade Lakes Region, is renowned for fishing, swimming, sailing, water skiing, and for years has served as one of the most desirable vacation areas in the Northeast. The seven lakes in the Belgrade system offer a 40 mile canoe trip with minimal fording through the chain.
Three major bodies of water in the Belgrade Lakes chain dominate the landscape, providing many opportunities for water-related activities. The attractiveness of the lakes makes it easy to see why the town has one of the largest concentrations of summer camps for children in all of Maine. Approximately eighty miles from Portland and forty-five miles from the Atlantic coast. The four major water bodies in Town, McGrath Pond, Salmon Lake, East Pond, and Messalonskee Lake and Stream have played a major role in the history and are likely to continue to do so for the immediate future.
Year-round, Belgrade serves as a bedroom community for Waterville and Augusta, and in the summer the throng of visitors and summer residents triple the usual population. A number of children's camps are located on the Belgrade Chain of lakes which have provided summer recreation for children for more than 50 years.
Belgrade is a part of School Administrative District #47 which is recognized as one of the finest school systems in the State of Maine. In addition, there are a variety of activities available to residents such as visits to the State Capitol in nearby Augusta, several local theater companies, tours provided by some of the local paper and textile mills, Sugarloaf/USA ski area is less than an hour away, one can take advantage of the Maine Coastal area by driving a little more than an hour, and there is no place on earth where the fall foliage is more beautiful.
An 18 hole golf course is currently under construction in Belgrade with completion scheduled for 1998.
Employment in the area is provided through The Chinet Company, S.D, Warren Paper Mill, Kimberly-Clark Corporation, C.F. Hathaway Mill, Maine General Medical Center, Inland Hospital, Colby College, Thomas College, Kennebec Valley Technical College, SCI Technology, Inc., the State of Maine, and numerous small business establishments in the Central Maine area. Maine people are industrious and honest, the crime rate is minimal, and our people welcome visitors and newcomers to the Central Maine Area.
Homes in the Belgrade area vary dramatically in price depending on whether or not they are located on lake front property and whether they are year-round or seasonal dwellings. Many of the lake front properties are utilized at least part of the summer as rental units, thereby providing income for the owners in addition to their personal enjoyment. Large parcels of land are still affordable in this area of Maine.
