Harrison, Maine

Population: 2,315
Located in Cumberland County

Over 200 years ago, Harrison was the center of the lumbering world in Maine. Surrounded as it is by forests, and lakes, Harrison was the natural choice to live. Harrison is also located at the head of the lake, making transportation back in the 1800's easy.

Today Harrison is no longer an agricultural community. Lumbering and manufacturing are industries of the past. But it remains a rural community blessed with beautiful homes and neighborhoods, many on the lakeside and many more enjoying the peace and serenity of hillside locations with magnificent views. Harrison's location provides four seasons of swimming, boating, skiing, hiking, snowmobiling, and other activities close to nature.

Harrison is served by the Oxford Hills School district, and has an excellent reputation as a school district that looks out for the needs of all students, regardless of age and ability.

Just a few miles to the east are the "twin" cities of Lewiston and Auburn. They offer unique events and activities that draw hundreds of thousands of visitors. The jewel of Lewiston-Auburn's summer festivals is the Great Falls Balloon Festival, the largest event of its kind in New England. In August, thousands of spectators sample local food, music, and crafts while more than 40 hot air balloons float through the skies above the Twin Cities.

July brings with it the famous Liberty Festival during the Fourth of July weekend and, late in the month, the Festival De Joie celebrates many different cultures from around the world with food, fun, and entertainment. Also in July is the renowned "Moxie" Festival in Lisbon. Other places of interest include the Norlands Living History Center in Livermore, the Shaker Village in New Gloucester, and, of course, LL Bean in Freeport. Dozens of beautiful lakes for fishing and boating are within 15 miles of Harrison. Campers can take advantage of the campsites and amenities at many of the nearby lakes as well.

Attractive homes, from restored colonials to contemporary designs, grace the countryside. Many of the homes are on the Historical Register of Maine and have been lovingly restored and maintained. The newer homes lie on the outskirts of the town, and most of them are built on large tracts of land. Housing is reasonably priced, the average 2,500 square foot home will run from $200,000 to $350,000 depending on the size of the plot.

Harrison, the Friendly Village, is a wonderful place to raise children, live work and play.
