Oakland, Maine
Population: 5,959 Located in Kennebec County
Oakland, neighboring Waterville to the west, is the gateway to the well known Belgrade Lakes region, renowned for fishing, swimming, sailing, water skiing, and for years has served as one of the most desirable vacation areas in the Northeast. The seven lakes in the Belgrade system offer a 40 mile canoe trip with minimal fording through the chain. The Oakland area has one of the largest concentrations of summer camps for children in the state, including the New England Music Camp just over the town line in Sidney. Oakland serves as a bedroom community for Waterville and Augusta, and is a growing community. One reason for the growth is the popularity of it's school system, School Administrative District #47. The district has been recognized for a number of years as one of the state's best and most progressive systems. The system provides a variety of sports activities for both boys and girls. In addition, Oakland is a Mecca for summer people, whether visitors or summer residents, who triple the winter population. There are a variety of activities available to residents such as visits to the State Capitol in nearby Augusta, several local theater companies, tours are provided in some of the local paper and textile mills, Sugarloaf/USA ski area is less than an hour away, and one can lake advantage of the Maine Coastal area by driving a little more than an hour. Foliage tours in the fall attract numerous visitors. Employment in the area is provided through The Chinet Company, S.D. Warren Paper Mill, Kimberly-Clark Corporation, C.F. Hathaway Mill, Maine General Medical Center, Inland Hospital, Colby College, Thomas College, Kennebec Valley Technical College, SCI Technology, Inc., the State of Maine, and numerous small business establishments in the Central Maine area. Maine people are industrious and honest, the crime rate is minimal, and our people welcome visitors and newcomers to the Central Maine Area. Homes in the Oakland area vary dramatically in price from the very affordable to some of the more expensive homes in the Mid-Maine area. Many of the seasonal lake front properties are utilized at least part of the summer as rental units, thereby providing income for the owners in addition to their personal enjoyment. Large parcels of land are still available and affordable in this area of Maine. Some newer sub-divisions have been developed in recent years which attract many professional people from nearby Waterville and Augusta to take advantage of the school system for their children.
