Located in Sagadahoc County

Locale of the first attempted English settlement on our northeast coast where America's first transatlantic trader was built (1607), this old Maine town, incorporated in 1814, is a forested peninsula thrusting into the Atlantic less than halfway up Maine's long coastline. Easily accessible from U.S. 1, it lies between the Kennebec River and Casco Bay in one of the nation's most historically significant and scenically beautiful coastal areas.

Here, amid the sights and scents of the woodlands along winding roads that once were Indian trails by the rivers and the sea, are landmarks of our American heritage, seemingly suspended in time. Here, in the clean and bracing sea air, the magnificent surf eternally beating upon miles of rocky shores and sandy beaches as in the days of the first settlers, constantly but imperceptibly changes the coastal contour. Diversity distinguishes the character of the ten villages around the peninsula's perimeter - seaside fishing settlements nestled on steep ledges, resorts along broad beaches, river and countryside communities.

Wrested from the wilderness over 350 years ago, and evolving through the years of shipbuilding, sawmilling and ice cutting, this area became mostly a vacation retreat, with fishing the continuing industry. Many noted artists have found inspiration here, for history and nature have given Phippsburg the serenity and unspoiled charm so valued and challenged in stressful times.

Phippsburg and Georgetown date back to the early 1600s may very well be Maine's best kept secrets of paradise, stretching down a long peninsula not far from Portland.
