Sebago, Maine
Population: 1,433 Located in Cumberland County
The Town of Sebago is located only forty minutes northwest of Portland, Maine. The town has a very quiet and rural atmosphere for nine months of the year. Most of its 1200 residents work in the greater Portland area. In the summer months it transforms into a very popular resort area. Located at the beginning of the Sebago-Long Lakes Region and with miles of frontage on the west shore of Sebago Lake, Sebago has catered to the tourists since before the turn of the century. Visitors would come by horse and buggy or by steamboat to stay at one of its big hotels on Douglas Hill, or at a rooming house on the lake. These places are gone now, but the summer friends are still coming and the people of Sebago are still providing them warm hospitality. The town his much to offer the sports minded. Within its boundaries are many lakes, ponds and streams for swimming, fishing, sailing, water skiing, boating, and canoeing. Sebago even has its own beach and launching area on Sebago Lake. Sebago Lake is the home of the landlocked salmon and the lake holds the record for the largest fish in many different species. Acres of woods allow for hiking, hunting, cross country siding, and snowmobiling trails. Sebago has its own wonderful Douglas Hill for hiking and blueberry picking. From the stone tower at the top, one can see the mountains, lakes and even a peek at the ocean in Portland. Check on a map and you'll see that the town is only a short drive to the mountains to the northwest and the ocean to the south. If shopping is your "sport", check out a few of the antique shops or outlet malls that are nearby.
