Besides being on the ocean it has close proximity to lakes, rivers, mountains, golf courses, and several other outdoor activities. The city of South Portland has a variety of things to offer. There are shopping malls, movie theaters, restaurants, bars, parks, colleges, universities, and many other attractions for its residents and tourists.

The City of South Portland celebrates its centennial this year with concerts, museum exhibits and other civic events. Originally a "parish" of Portland, present day South Portland and Cape Elizabeth became a separate district in 1765. In 1895, about 8,000 acres of the area known as "Purpoodock" split from Cape Elizabeth and became the Town of South Portland.

The city incorporated in 1898. Today, the city of 23,163 residents reaches from Portland Harbor west to encompass the busy Maine Mall business district. The city has extensive commercial and industrial development as well as a wealth of unique neighborhoods.
