Stoneham, Maine

Population: 255
Located in Oxford County

Stoneham is in Oxford County, which is famous for its lumber products, great hunting and fishing, and gems from the earth: amethyst, beryl, quartz, feldspar, granite, mica and garnet. It is one hundred miles from Kittery, forty-five miles from Portland and twenty-eight miles from North Conway, New Hampshire. It's a small town with just a few people, but it has a store with restaurant, its own post office, one church, a fire department and a rescue service.

And, it's growing in popularity! Many people are drawn to the region because of the solitude, and wide open spaces. Stoneham is located on a lake, Kezar, and there are several others in the area. Homes here reflect the natural beauty of the region, and many of them are built chalet style with large windows that give spectacular views of the lakes and the mountains.

Properties do come at a premium though. To buy three acres of land on which to build a home, you will have to spend around $95,000. A two bedroom chalet home costs around $295,00, and a contemporary three bedroom home with a view, and land will set you back to the tune of $390,000.

There are many natural things to see: beautiful ponds, lakes, rivers and streams, including waterfalls. And as people enjoy all of these, they can canoe, hike, mountain climb, water ski, visit old open mines, and of course enjoy all the winter activities available here. Some of these include: downhill and cross country skiing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and ice fishing. There are several golf courses in the area, which are open to the public.

Day trips from Stoneham include visiting the Sebago Lakes Region, Pleasant Mountain in Bridgton, Songo River Queen sightseeing tours in Naples, canoeing the Saco River out of Fryeburg, the Fryeburg Fair, and visits to Perham's Mineral Store and Quarries at Trap Corner in West Paris. All of these are in Maine. In nearby New Hampshire are Conway's scenic railroad, Santa's Village, Storyland, Heritage, New Hampshire, and Clark's Trading Post.

Once there were a hundred and twenty covered bridges in Maine but there are only ten left, and most of these are here in Western Maine. Stoneham is an old city that has become modern, it is in a prime location to grow and expand quickly and efficiently. It is has beauty and opportunity to grow -what more are you waiting for, come and see what Stoneham can do for you!
