Aspen Hill, Maryland
Population: 50,228
Located in Montgomery County
Aspen Hill is located in Montgomery County, Maryland. It's not far at all from the District of Columbia. Washington DC is "downtown", less than ten miles away. It's a short bus ride from here to several MetroRail stations. MetroRail is the public subway and surface railway transportation system serving the area.
About two miles due south of Aspen Hill on Georgia Avenue is the Glenmont MetroRail station, the northern final railway station on the eastern extension of the "Red Line" route. Also nearby, in terms of travel time, are Rockville Station and Twinbrook Station, located in the nearby City of Rockville, MD, the seat of government for Montgomery County. These MetroRail stations are served both by the MetroBus, and the County's own "Ride-On" busses which conveniently travel their routes through the middle of Aspen Hill.
Aspen Hill was largely agricultural until the middle of the Twentieth Century. The land grant for "Lahill" (the original spelling of Layhill) was in 1718 and included 1298 acres of land. Large land areas were gradually divided and sold, creating farms of several hundred acres each. At the time of the American Revolution, there was a mill on upper Rock Creek, called Elgar's Mill, near the site of the later Muncaster Mill. When State voting districts were established in 1790, this area became known as the Berry District.
