Olney is located between Baltimore and Washington. Brookeville and Sandy Spring are also part of the Olney community. The area is deeply rooted in history. From the early 1700's, shortly after Maryland was founded as a colony, a few settlers--James Brooke being one-- purchased considerable amounts of land. Mr. Brooke (later Brookeville to be named) built a grist mill and biscuit factory in the area presently known as Gold Mine Road. The area has continuously been an area for innovation in the farming business. Sandy Spring was originally settled by Quakers. Their peaceful yet industrious nature lends a distinctive quality to the neighborhood. These early settlers organized banking and insurance companies and continued the same prosperous farming tradition. The area remains an agricultural area with a few working farms and yet offers all of the cultural and commercial activities of suburbia. There are plenty of restaurants, theaters and shopping centers to choose from as well as a variety of places of worship and community living/activities. The recently developed land for the Olney Boys and Girls Club is a pristine, impeccably cared-for area of soccer fields, lacrosse fields, baseball diamonds and football fields for the children and families of Olney to enjoy indefinitely! |
