St Charles, MarylandSt. Charles is a 9,100 acre master planned community situated 23 miles south of our Nations Capitol in historic Charles County, Maryland. Offering both the amenities of a rural setting and the vast employment, cultural and entertainment opportunities of the Washington D.C. metropolitan area, St. Charles is a location of choice for both families and businesses alike. First started in 1965, and halfway through completion, St. Charles continues to be a growing and dynamic community. Today, St. Charles celebrates the opening of Fairway Village, the third of the five planned Villages of St. Charles. Over 20 percent of St. Charles is permanent parkland. There are miles of paths for hiking and biking, 16 lakes, a conservation area, and White Plains Regional Park with an 18-hole public golf course and ballfields of all types. Education In Westlake Village, the schools are among the newest in the county and are designed with state-of-the-art computer labs. In fact, the county's newest high school is Westlake High, which has won awards for its architecture and design. More importantly, Westlake's principal was honored as one of the metro area's top educators by The Washington Post. Villages The first, Smallwood Village, with four neighborhoods is substantially complete. The Smallwood Village Center, Business Park North and Henry Ford Circle are integral to Smallwood Village. Westlake Village, contains three neighborhoods with 4,272 housing units. Also the site of St. Charles' commercial center, its centerpiece is the St. Charles Towne Center Mall, a 1.1 million square foot regional mall with no comparable competition within a 30 mile radius. Developed by Simon Property Group along with the adjacent St. Charles Towne Plaza, a 400,000 square foot shopping center, these bustling retail centers clearly establish that St. Charles has reached the "critical mass" population - the goal of every successful planned community. St. Charles latest community, Fairway Village, so named for the existing championship 18-hole public golf course which it surrounds, is currently being developed. Homesales have begun in the first neighborhood, Sheffield. The last two villages, Wooded Glen and Piney Reach, set on 3,500 undeveloped acres, are planned for development after the completion of Fairway Village and are expected to contain approximately 10,000 housing units.
