Over a century ago, thousands of wooden sloops known as skipjacks left the docks each dawn along the eastern shores of Maryland. The 65-foot sturdy vessels were designed for one task - to dredge the bottom of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries for oysters. Today only 13 are still in service and are recognized by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, a private nonprofit group in Washington, D.C., as an endangered historic plan. The group President Richard Moe explains, "Although the trust calls it a list of endangered places, the meaning of 'place' has expanded. In the end, the list is not really about individual sites. It is all about memories and how we will carry those memories into the future."

Dogwood Harbor, Tilghman Island, has the largest fleet of working skipjacks left in North America, while others can be seen in St. Michaels at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum.

During the summer months enjoy wonderful ghost tours, eco-tours, lighthouse tours, skipjack tours, historic walking tours, street concerts, concerts in the park, and the First Friday Gallery Walk. August sizzles with the Performing Arts Festival.

Water activities are endless....sailing, boating, sport fishing and kayaking. Three of the finest golf courses on the Eastern Shore, hunting, bicycling, birding - all lend to your ability to chose to do as much or as little as you like.
