Located just 13 miles north of Downtown Baltimore City, the city of Towson, is situated inside the Beltway (I-695), east of I-83 and along York Road. Lying to the west of Towson are Ruxton and Riderwood, which many consider to be part of the community. The communities surrounding Towson-Ruxton are Lutherville-Timonium and Hampton to the north, Pikesville to the west and Parkville to the east. The county seat of Baltimore County, Towson features a number of neighborhoods including: Anneslie, East Towson, and West Towson, Hunt Crest Estates, Rodgers Forge, Southland Hills, Stoneleigh, and Wiltondale.

Ruxton is considered one of Baltimore's premier neighborhoods; here you will find many of the original country estates of the city's historic elite and the L'Hirondelle Country Club. While the community has become more suburbanized, Ruxton hosts one of the highest real estate values in Maryland.

While most residents attend private schools, Towson-Ruxton residents are located in the Baltimore County Public Schools district. The three high schools in the community include: Towson High School, Loch Raven High School, and Carver Center for Arts and Technology. Towson High School was ranked #279 on Newsweek magazine's "The 1,200 Top U.S. high schools" in 2007; courses include the renowned Law and Public Policy Program, Latin, and forensic science, among others. Towson’s literary arts magazine, Colophon, is ranked as on of the top student-produced magazines in the country. The Colophon has won national prizes from the National Scholastic Press Association and Columbia University, as well as state prizes from the Maryland Scholastic Press Association.

Carver Center for Arts and Technology is a public magnet high school located in Towson, known for its distinguished arts program. With approximately 800 students, who are selected by combination of audition and lottery, Carver's magnet programs feature nine specialty areas, or "primes": literary arts, culinary, business, carpentry, cosmetology, dance, design and production, acting, vocal music, and visual arts (art such as painting, sculpture ect.). The visual art prime is further divided into concentrations, including drawing and painting, multimedia, photography, sculpture, and telemedia.

Private Schools
Loyola Blakefield Jesuit School is an all-male, Catholic, college preparatory school known for their strong academic program, high SAT scores and National Merit Finalists. Loyola Blakefield's Football, Swimming, and Lacrosse teams have ranked well throughout the Baltimore region. Their rivaly with neighboring Calvert Hall College High School (CHC), is one of the oldest catholic school rivalries in the country. For over 87 years, the schools have played in the annual Turkey Bowl football game on Thanksgiving Day, currently hosted at Baltimore's M&T Bank Stadium.

Notre Dame Preparatory School is a private, all-female, Roman Catholic high school. One of the oldest Catholic, college preparatory schools for girls in Baltimore, Notre Dame Preparatory has a 100% graduation and college matriculation rate. Students can choose from over 160 courses, including 25 Advanced Placement options, and Japanese, as well as 25 student clubs and 15 interscholastic sports.

Located on the campus of Immaculate Conception Church of Towson is the co-educational, Towson Catholic High School. Towson Catholic is noted for its Men and Women's Basketball teams, Carmelo Anthony of the NBA's Denver Nuggets, attended the school for 3 years.

Baltimore Lutheran School is a private secondary school, serving grades 6-12. Situated on twenty-five acres, the Saints and Lady Saints are known for their soccer, track and lacrosse teams.

Higher Education
Towson University (TU or Towson) is the second largest public university in Maryland, serving over 20,000 full-time and part-time students. With 8 colleges providing 64 undergraduate majors, 37 master's degree programs and 4 doctoral programs, TU offers one of only 100 US undergraduate programs in gerontology and one of the only public universities to offer undergraduate degree in e-Business. For U.S. News & World Report’s 2007 ‘America's Best Colleges’ issue, Towson University placed 40th in the Public Universities-Master’s (North) category and 45th in the 2008 issue.

Goucher College is a co-educational liberal arts college, with over 2,000 students and offering 33 undergraduate subjects and 5 graduate programs. One of the first colleges to allow internships, Goucher’s students are required to complete at least one study abroad experience, offering a wide range of three-week "intensive courses abroad" as well as semester and year-long programs, in concert with vouchers to subsidize the costs.
