Waldorf is the busiest area in Charles County. It is the major commercial and industrial region in Southern Maryland. Most of the people who work in Charles County work in Waldorf. A large number of Waldorf residents commute to Washington, D.C. Thousands of residents work at the Patuxent River Naval Air Station. Others work in either Baltimore or Virginia.
St. Charles is perhaps the most suburban area in Charles County. It is a master-planned community situated on about 10,000 acres adjacent to Waldorf. It is a community of tree-lined streets and sidewalks. It is a neighborhood encircling schools, churches, shopping centers and recreation centers, and is home to numerous public playgrounds, swimming pools, fishing ponds and miles of paved trails and paths for biking and jogging. It serves as a model to middle-class America.
Major department stores, membership warehouses and retail chains are concentrated in Waldorf. Waldorf is home to the St. Charles Towne Center, a 1.1 million square foot enclosed shopping mall, that is one of the most successful shopping facilities in the United States.
