Agawam/Feeding Hills was founded by English settler William Pynchon in 1635. The Indians who lived and farmed the area at the time gave it its name. "Aggu" meaning low land and "wame" meaning low land surrounded by higher ground. Today Agawam/Feeding Hills is still known as home to many farms, as a community where the entrepreneurial spirit is tangible and a place where neighbors still know each other. The community possesses a varied and skilled work force including professionals, those with manufacturing experience as well as workers in the so-called "new collar" service and high tech industries. Its school system is fully accredited and its school programs and curriculum are among the best in the region. Four outstanding golf courses and New England's largest amusement park, Riverside Park, are available in Agawam. Riverside is also home to NASCAR auto racing. Agawam/Feeding Hills is a neighbor of the city of Springfield, which hosts regional fine art and science museums, the Basketball Hall of Fame and the Springfield Falcons of the American Hockey League. The community is served by various service clubs including Rotary, Lions, Unico, various women's organizations and the Agawam/Feeding Hills Chamber of Commerce. Boating, mountain hiking, skiing and one of North America's largest fairs, the Eastern States Exposition, are virtually minutes away from the center of Agawam/Feeding Hills.Agawam/Feeding Hills is a community that knows its identity and knows where it is going. Perhaps this was best stated in the Coming Together for Consensus report issued by the leaders of the community. In their vision statement for Agawam/Feeding Hills, the authors stated, "Agawam is a place of tradition and opportunity. Convenient location, affordable land and buildings, and a low tax rate allow us to build good lives for ourselves. From Agawam's rural past we've retained a sense of being a small town where friendly people with a wide range of incomes know each other and participate in civic activities, school affairs and sports events. This is a good place to raise a family."
