This town dates back to 1676, in the days where small homes were continually plagued by Indian attacks. Today, this small town has its share of fame-an ox named HERO who died in 1860, was believed to be the largest ox that ever lived AND... according to agriculture annals, this town was the first New England community to produce maple syrup & sugar in any quantity. Now that you are briefed on the history.... let me take you around town. Bernardston is highly rural in character and one can walk the "L" shaped village in less than 10 minutes. With one of the best church-per-capita ratios in the country, white steeples dot the blue sky and the church suppers, ice cream socials and one of the areas best Halloween haunted houses offer much of the town's entertainment! There are the usual town offices, country store, town common and several popular restaurants in the area too, including a mountain top restaurant called Andiamo's which offers spectacular views down the valley. Bernardston has several small rural industries, lumber, fencing and feed mill, and a couple of larger ones including Mohawk Plastic and GBI Marketing business.
