Freetown was first settled during the colonial period. The section of Freetown known as Assonet dates from the 1659 Freeman's Purchase when land was acquired from Chief Wamsutta. The history of Freetown is long and interesting. The Freetown historical Society has a lot of information on the history of the area, as well as a replica of a 19th century Blacksmith Shop.
