Hyannis is the town's central business/commercial district which includes town offices and several shopping malls. Hyannis is also a fishing village and its harbor provides steamship access to Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket Islands. It is a residential area, and it also contains the town’s central business/commercial district, which includes town offices and several shopping districts, including Cape Cod Mall and the historic downtown Main Street. Cape Cod Potato Chips is headquartered in Hyannis, and Zayre Department Stores opened their first location on Main Street in 1956.

Hyannis has the most ethnically diverse community on Cape Cod, with one of the largest Brazilian communities in the state outside of Boston reside in Hyannis. Attractions and events in Hyannis are frequently of a multicultural nature.

Hyannisport (also Hyannis Port) is an affluent residential and fishing village. Hyannis Harbor provides access to the islands of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. It is also the location of the Kennedy family residence.
