Marlborough became a town in 1660, and was incorporated as a city in 1890. Marlborough, in the 1660's, was a farming community. It's business and population growth developed as a result of its location on the Boston Post Road, the historic "interstate highway" running from Boston to New York. In the 1800's Marlborough became a center of shoe manufacturing. When Marlborough was incorporated as a city in 1890 with a population of 14,000, its seal contained a factory, a shoe box, and a pair of boots. Marlborough has a long history of offering hospitality for travelers.
Today, Marlborough still has a thriving hotel and restaurant industry. Tourists and business alike are attracted to its location at the crossroads of Route 495 and the Mass Pike. The city attracts visitors to its convention center and sports complex. Today, Marlborough's industry is diversified with some concentration in the computer and high technology class.
