Newbury, Massachusetts
Population: 6,717 Located in Essex County
Newbury/Plum Island, Massachusetts Newbury Newbury is located in the northeastern portion of Essex County. Pawtucket Indians hunted, fished and captured seasonal runs of smelt, alewives, shad, salmon and see-run trout before settlers appeared. Newbury hosts a number of New England's most important examples of Colonial architecture, one of which is the Tristram Coffin House, built in 1654. The Plum Island section of town is a residential area, much loved by its summer and year-round residents. The development of transportation in the Merrimack Valley Region, where Newbury is situated, was shaped by the history of the region as a major site of American industrial development in the nineteenth century. The area has exceptionally good highway and rail facilities linking the major cities and towns to each other and to the port, airport, and intermodal facilities of Boston. Plum Island Plum Island is a small barrier island just off the extreme northeast coast of Massachusetts and is part of Newbury, Newburyport, Rowley, and Ipswich. The island is separated - barely - from the mainland by the Parker River; the northern tip is at the mouth of the Merrimac River. Most of Plum Island (the southern part) is the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge, but the northern portion is densely settled with both year-round and seasonal residents. The architecture is a mix of old beach cottages, comfortable saltboxes, standard residential homes, and spectacular oceanfront houses. Virtually the entire oceanfront is beautiful public beach, although much of it is accessible only by foot. There are also boardwalks in the Refuge that take you through the dunes and out onto the beach. The Parker River National Wildlife Refuge and Sandy Point State Park are part of this beautiful beach community. The island is well known as an outstanding birding spot. It's a stop off on many many migration paths. Birders come from all over the world to add to their life lists on Plum Island.
