Shrewsbury is a suburban community of 32,000. Located in central Massachusetts, only 5 miles east of Worcester and 34 miles west of Boston, the town began in 1664 with a 3,200-acre land grant. Settlers came primarily from Sudbury and Marlborough to create an agricultural economy with apple orchards. A leather industry began in 1786 and large cattle herds supported the manufacture of boots and shoes. The establishment of gunsmith operations, which produced rifles, shotguns and pistols and eventually cutlery, followed. In the 19th century, streetcar routes spurred the growth of single-family housing and a summer resort population on Lake Quinsigamond.
