Massachusetts Real Estate & Relocation Guide
Townsend, Massachusetts
Population: 9,198
Located in Middlesex County
Townsend has dozens of antique dealers in town, which attracts tourists from across the nation.
Town government consists of a board of three selectmen, although there have been several attempts to increase the board to five members to ensure better representation. There is also an executive secretary, who is responsible for much of the administrative work associated with town government. Memorial Hall, built in 1894, is the center of the town's operations; currently, the building is undergoing a renovation. Town offices have moved to temporary quarters at 241 Main St. while Memorial Hall is renovated.
Public meetings are held in several locations throughout Townsend during this period of renovation; dates, times and locations of public meetings are posted in the temporary town hall at 241 Main St. As do other towns of comparable size, Townsend also boasts numerous home-based businesses. There are also larger industries, such as Sterilite Corp., several auto dealerships, and a few shopping malls. Townsend is Cue base of operations for the North Middlesex Regional School District, which educates students from Townsend, Ashby and Pepperell at the regional high school at 19 Main St. (Route 119), near the Townsend-Pepperell line.
Highway department funding and personnel issues have come to the fore recently in Townsend, as selectmen struggle to ensure roads are maintained and that he landfill, which is operated by the town, remains in compliance with existing regulations. Townsend's police and fire departments are adequately funded, although the fire department does have a few antique fire engines still in operation.
Murdoch Middle Public Charter School
A four-year public middle school of choice, the Murdoch Middle Public Charter School is open by lottery to all residents of Massachusetts in grades five through eight.
Nashoba Valley Techical High School
Nashoba Valley Technical High School is a regional technical school that opened in 1969 to serve both technical and academic needs of high school-aged young men and women. Today, students from the towns of Chelmsford, Groton, Littleton, Pepperell, Shirley, Townsend and Westford enjoy the career preparation in 20 technical programs on an alternating week basis. Our students also take rigorous academic courses required for a high school diploma and entrance into two and four year college programs.
There is public water available to residents and businesses along Main Street and part of Route 13, but there is no public sewer system in town yet, an issue select-men say will become a problem coming in the next century as the town population grows and water protection must be considered.
