Belleville was first platted in 1848 by George Hill, D.L. Quirk and Robert P. Clark. The name Belleville means beautiful village and is said by some to have been coined to honor a popular local resident James Bell. Incorporated first as a village in 1905, Belleville gained city status in 1946. Since that time, Belleville has offered its resident all the conveniences of a city while still maintaining a small town atmosphere.
Belleville is 1.5 square miles and is located in Wayne County. Some of the attractions of Belleville are: Belleville Lake, Fred C. Fischer Library, Victory Park, Horizon Scenic Park, and the Statue of LaSalle in Victory Park. There is also shopping during the Strawberry Festival every June for three days. Belleville is close the University of Michigan and to Eastern Michigan University. There is also community colleges near by.
The City of Belleville is served by the Van Buren Public School District. Located within the city are Belleville High School, Belleville Vocational Center, South Middle School, Edgmont Elementary and the Van Buren Public Schools Administration Building.
The recreational activities provided by Belleville Lake and three city parks are complemented by nearby Van Buren Park, the Huron Clinton Metropolitan Parks System and the Wayne County Parks System. Several challenging golf courses and ski slopes are within easy driving distance. The Belleville Area Council for the Arts which sponsors cultural events such as the Belleville Artist Colony, art show and concerts. The Belleville Music Festival is held over three days the weekend of July at Horizon Park and the Belleville Central Business community sponsors several special events throughout the year in the downtown.
