The City of Birmingham, Michigan is located in Oakland County, one of the richest counties in the United States and is approximately 6 miles north of the City of Detroit. In 1836, a local foundry owner, Roswell Merrill, envisioned the community having a prosperous industrial future and proposed re-naming it after Birmingham, England, birthplace of the industrial revolution. This new name was adopted in 1838.

Birmingham did begin to prosper as a retreat for wealthy Detroit business owners. The City played an important role in the development of the auto industry, gaining notoriety as a prominent business area.

Today, the City of Birmingham is a vibrant, prosperous community, with a population of approximately 20,000. Covering only 4.73-square-miles, the community is able to maintain the feel of a small town, while experiencing the benefits of an affluent urban area.

It has never lost the prestige that was initially dreamed for this city. For people in Michigan, the name "Birmingham" conjures up images of a vital, growing, and rather exclusive enclave, one where people from other communities come to enjoy all the wonderful activities that are available.

A bustling downtown combines with quiet parks set in the middle of the town, with winding rivers and weeping willows. Many of the homes are set back from the road, along tree-lined peaceful back streets. However, there are many brand-new condos built right along the main downtown area, and these are extremely popular with the young upcoming executives.

It is not unusual to buy a starter home here that prices out at $300,000 and up. This is a prestigious neighborhood, and the name and zip code go a long way to making sure the prices are high, but the resale value is also extremely high.

Birmingham is also known for its excellent school district, which was rated in the Top Ten in the United States for Academic Excellence. It has combined with Bloomfield to ensure a top-quality education where every service and amenity is offered to students to aid them in their studies and ensure their success.

The City of Birmingham has a lively, pedestrian friendly downtown offering one of the Midwest's premier shopping districts. A diverse assortment of fine shops, restaurants, art galleries, antique dealers, and clothiers await visitors.

There is plenty to do in this lovely town, from the shopping to the theater, to visiting an art gallery or two. And the access to the freeways is only a few miles away, so the drive to Detroit and all it has to offer is just a straight shot.

There are many exclusive clubs in this area too, and in joining one you are guaranteed privacy, and special perks, including sports and activities.

This is definitely a city for the young executives, for those who love the nightlife and the culture of a small city. This indeed is a place in to "live, shop, and play."
