Canton has a competitive edge over many of the area communities due to its central location, just 20 minutes from both Ann Arbor and downtown Detroit. Only 10 minutes from Detroit Metropolitan Airport and Willow Run Airport, Canton is also home to Canton-Plymouth Mettetal Airport, located at Joy and Lilley Roads. Canton, located at the crossroads of M-153 (Ford Road) and the Interstate 275 corridor, is also accessible via Michigan Avenue, which runs east west through the southern portion of the community. Interstates 96 and 94 lie to the north and south, respectively, allowing for quick and easy access both into and out of the community. Canton, as one of the fastest growing communities in the area, issued 763 occupancy permits in 1999. While most of this growth has been with single-family homes and condominiums, plans for more multi-family developments are in the works. This year will see the addition of upscale apartment complexes along with condominiums and large single-family homes. Canton continues to attract many top developers and builders because of the opportunities to construct unique, one-of-a-kind homes in the community. Cherry Hill village will bring a new, unique concept to community life for the Canton Community. The village will be designed as a replica of community life back in the 1930's with small lot sizes for residential and commercial business in the Town Square. The excitement for new homeowners of all ages in the community stems from the vast array of opportunities for recreation, leisure, education and a combination of the many business services offered in Canton.
Canton is served by three school districts, which include Plymouth-Canton Community Schools, Wayne-Westland Schools and Van Buren Schools. The Plymouth-Canton Community Schools serve most of Canton, which consists of 14 elementary schools, five middle schools and two high schools. Two new elementary schools, a middle school and a new high school are currently under construction. Newcomers to the community may consult with their Realtor or the Chamber of Commerce for information regarding school district boundary lines. In addition to the highly regarded public education institutions, Canton is also home to a number of private institutions.
Canton is rich with opportunities for leisure time activity, making it not only an exciting place to live and work, but also an exciting place to play. The community provides a host of facilities and organized events that promote individual and family activity.
The center of our community recreation, Summit on the Park, is recognized throughout the southeastern Michigan area for its unique recreational programs and services as well as its quality full-service banquet facilities. The Summit, an 85,000-square-foot facility, offers a full-service fitness center, an aquatics area, a gymnasium, an indoor running track, racquetball courts, and dance studios. Leaders in the community continue to place a great emphasis on developing open space and park areas for the use and enjoyment of the public. Canton is home to two golf courses. Fellows Creek Golf Course offers 27 holes and Pheasant Run Golf Course currently features 18 holes. The community also plays host to many special events throughout the year. Liberty Fest continues to be Canton's most popular annual festival and is joined throughout the year by October Fest, summer concert series in Heritage Park, the annual Fishing Derby, Marshmallow Drop and other events for all ages.
