The city of Clawson is a small, residential community with close proximity to big city amenities. Though small in size, Clawson is big on community. Incorporated as a Home Rule City in 1940, meaning a city is given the right to draft and amend its own charter and to regulate purely local matters without interference from the state legislature, today Clawson is maintaining its small town ambiance while making it's mark as a progressive city in the 21st century.
Clawson has almost 50 acres of parkland. Recreational possibilities are happening year round with a community recreation center, well-maintained ball fields, regulation soccer fields, lighted tennis courts, state-of-the-art playgrounds and picnic areas laid out in green open spaces. Community sponsored recreational programs are offered for all ages including senior events and pre-school programs. Volunteer organizations and service clubs are very active from Clawson's Historical Society, the American Legion, and Scouting programs to Garden Clubs and charitable events.
Clawson's educational facilities have just gone through a major upgrade. High-tech computer labs, building enhancements, playground renovation, and facility expansion allowing smaller classroom sizes are just a few of the many updates the students of Clawson are enjoying. The district consists of four schools-Clawson High School, Clawson Middle School, Kenwood Elementary School, and Schalm Elementary School. The district also offers several pre-school programs and child care/latchkey programs. Daycare is offered for children ages 2 1/2 through Kindergarten at Hunter Community Center. Latchkey services are available for Grades 1 through 5, and are offered at Hunter Center, Kenwood Elementary School, and Schalm Elementary School.
Besides having an abundance of affordable housing in great neighborhoods, an excellent educational system, fantastic recreational opportunities, and a host of community resources including an historical museum and the Clawson Library offering book delivery to homebound patrons, video rental, books on tape, music cds, Polaroid cameras, photocopiers, internet access, e-book terminal, and programs for pre-school, after-school, and Saturday programs, Clawson offers its residents a quality of life backed by a pride in the community second to none.
