Michigan Real Estate & Relocation Guide
Galesburg, Michigan
Population: 1,988
Located in Kalamazoo County
Fifteen minutes from Battle Creek and from Kalamazoo lies the small, but unique city of Galesburg. Unique in the sense that this city has a sub-division that was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. The Galesburg Country Homes subdivision was designed 1947 as a cooperative community. It is one of two cooperatives founded by a group of young scientists employed at the Upjohn Company who prevailed upon Wright to design affordable houses they could build themselves - the other is Parkwyn Village in Kalamazoo. In the end only four houses were built, and these are showcase homes today that sell for more than other homes in the area, for around $200,000, high for Galesburg.
The average home is generally built on a large tract of land, unless you're looking to buy in the downtown area. Prices range from the high $90's to the low $150's. A three bedroom ranch home on two to five acres will sell for around $120,000. A home closer to the downtown area may sell for the same price, but has more historical value to it.
Galesburg has grown in the last decade, and although it is only comprised of 1,000 residents, Galesburg just opened a new state-of-the-art high school right on M89. With the latest technology and wonderful teachers, the Galesburg-Augusta School District offers students great opportunities to excel at school. For tertiary education, look no further than Kalamazoo, with its fine colleges.
Looking for something to do? Galesburg is a city for all seasons! With skiing and tobogganing at nearby Echo Valley, Galesburg has you covered in the winter. For the long summer nights for which Michigan is famous, come out and enjoy the speedway, open most of the year for all kinds of car races. If nature is more to your liking, come and visit Binder Park Zoo, an African Safari experience that can be shared almost all year round. Battle Creek, home of Kellogg's offers "Cereal City" a museum of the history of cereal.
The automotive industry is thriving on this side of the state, along with a brand new Target Distribution Center that opened on the outskirts of Galesburg. For those looking to work a little further afield, there are plenty of job opportunities in Battle Creek and Kalamazoo itself.
Galesburg is one of those small communities that has more to offer than first meets the eye. And with a great location, only 15 minutes from two growing cities, Galesburg is a welcome refuge from the busyness of life. Come and see how you can be enriched by being a part of this city.
