The South Lyon Area is conveniently located within the perimeter of U.S. 23, I-96 and M-14, making it easy for residents and visitors to access those expressways. Since the city is only 3.5 square miles, most of the South Lyon community is actually parts of these townships: Lyon, Northfield, Salem and Green Oak. These townships sport a semi-rural landscape, with many large fenced parcels of land used for horse farms. New housing developments are evidence of the 25% growth in population that the area experienced in the 1980's, though there is still plenty of room and multi-acre parcels for those who want to experience a rural life-style.

The South Lyon area is renowned as the "Horse Capital of Michigan", with many training facilities, boarding stables, large fenced horse farms and an esteemed high school equestrian team. The breeding, raising and training of horses for tracks in nearby Northville and Livonia is an integral part of the South Lyon history.

Residents of the South Lyon area enjoy a high quality of life with access to some of the finest recreational areas in all of Michigan. The area is dotted with lakes and golf courses, while cider mills, apple orchards, state parks and metroparks are just a short drive or bike ride away.

The recently formed South Lyon Downtown Development Authority has local business and property owners meeting regularly to devise plans for the rebirth of the South Lyon downtown. Downtown buildings are being restored and renovated with new facades and additions to turn-of-the-century buildings, and plans are underway to recruit new business to downtown. There is a true commitment to restore and maintain the downtown community.
