The City of Southgate is located among the downriver communities of Wayne County. It is bounded by Fort Road (M-85) on the east and Allen Road on the west. The Interstate 75 Freeway crosses the northwest corner of the City. A Conrail line parallels I-75.

The population of Southgate is approximately 30,136. Many of the residents are employed in nearby auto manufacturing, steel making, and chemical processing industries.

The City is principally a residential community with some industrial development mainly in the vicinity of I-75 and Northline Road. Commercial development is found mainly along Eureka Road between Allen and Fort Roads.

Nearby communities include Taylor, Allen Park, and Dearborn. All of them provide great diversity in race, culture, industry, and manufacturing. Southgate, in comparison to some of the other communities is extremely affordable with houses ranging in price from $50,000 to $150,000.

Southland Mall, one of the first malls built in North America is located nearby. Stores include Hudson's and JC Penny. Many other national chain stores represented attract customers from the surrounding communities. Southgate has an excellent public golf course. It is a well-maintained, executive golf course with three lakes, watered fairways, bunkers, knolls, and trees. Rental equipment is available for travelers, a good restaurant, and a pro shop. Without a doubt, their facility is a first class operation that is moderately priced.

Southgate is the gate to the downriver communities with all the access to the water; water sports are so popular in the Michigan area. Southgate is an affordable community and yet its residents can drive to Lake St. Clair within a few minutes.
