It is approximately 14 miles southwest of Pontiac and twenty miles northeast of Ann Arbor. Walled Lake is located within close proximity to three major highways, I-96, M-59, and US-23 making easy access to surrounding communities and work. Walled Lake is also close to many other communities, including Commerce, Novi, Milford and Wixom. The name was believed to have derived from the appearance of the areas' lake, which looked like the waters were "walled" due to drift deposits or the action of water and ice. The village grew as a suburban area adjacent to Detroit, eventually incorporating as a city in 1954.
If trail walking is your idea of a great afternoon out, then you have to look no further you're your back yard! Even the newer sub-divisions have been built with a "nature first" thrust. Deer stroll across the backyards, and it is common to see fox prints in the early morning snow. Dodge State Park, which is part of the Proud Lake State Recreation Park extends into Walled Lake. This park has great trails for walking, or even dirt biking, as there are some areas open to that sport.
Walled Lake is one of the more reasonably priced towns in Oakland County. Houses range in price from $180,000.00 up into the millions. Most houses are either on lakes, or have lake access. Many homes were originally summer vacation cottages and so Walled Lake has retained an "olde world" charm. There are many new constructions, but they have melded well with the existing architecture.
If shopping is your thing, then look no further than Novi and its famed 12 Oaks Mall and surrounding Town Center; or Milford, with its beautiful downtown area with its specialty stores which cater to a variety of tastes, from antique furniture to doll restoration to wonderful bakeries.
Walled Lake is proud to announce that its school district is consistently voted the #1 school district in the state of Michigan. Education is of paramount importance to residents of Walled Lake. Every child in middle school is offered the opportunity to own a laptop, and many varied programs are offered to the students.
A brand-new, state-of-the-art high school opened in the fall of 2002.
