Since its early settlings in the 1850s, the City of Anoka has continued to retain its small town character despite surrounding developing suburbs. Although existing quite separate from the Twin Cities in character, Anoka is only 20 miles from downtown Minneapolis. Situated at the confluence of the Rum and Mississippi Rivers, this historic river city has a bountiful array of recreational and leisure activities to enjoy. In early 1920, Anoka merchants and other interested citizens joined together in a move to stop Halloween pranks. The idea was to have a big Halloween party for all the children with free candy and lots of entertainment. In October of 1920, Anoka had its first Halloween celebration. The celebration has been held every year since, with the exception of two years during WWII. Anoka considers itself to be the "Halloween Capital of the World" and now has many events during October including football games, costume contests, block parties, Grey Ghost 5k run, and two parades. As a river community, Anoka can offer water sports that include boating, canoeing, and fishing to its other numerous opportunities such as trails, corridors, athletic complexes, neighborhood parks, open space, golf course, aquatic center, and senior center. Anoka has maintained a tradition of excellence in the provision of parks and recreational opportunities. It continues to be the goal of the city to provide excellence in parks and recreation for generations to come. When residents were asked what they especially liked about the town, residents said they were happy with the schools, they liked the open spaces and they were thrilled with the new growth and development they see happening in the area.
