Excelsior, Minnesota
Population: 4,000
Located in Hennepin County
The shores of Lake Minnetonka have been the birthplaces of many historic communities, but few have the ambience and charm of Excelsior. Once the site of a lakefront amusement park, streetcar lines and many hotels and resorts, this small city today honors its past with its delightfully renovated downtown area and community celebrations. Excelsior has many attractions, first and foremost, is the fact that it is so close to the Twin Cities and all the attractions that those two can offer. Add to that, the fact Excelsior itself is a small and peaceful community and you have the makings of heaven on earth. For sports enthusiasts, Minneapolis is home to the Minnesota Vikings and the Timberwolves. For the kids or the kids at heart, Snoopy, Charlie Brown, Linus, Lucy and the whole Peanuts Gang can be found wandering around Camp Snoopy, the indoor amusement park located in the Mall of America. Minneapolis is a city full of culture, diversity and unexpected treasures! Excelsior remains a small community because of its locality. Being right on the lake has its advantages; there is so much space to go around! This means the population has stayed remained steady at about 2,400 people for at least the last 30 years. Most homes are built on the lake, or have lake access. Homes range in price and size, all the way from million dollar mansions to small single family homes. Many of the homes have been restored to their former glory, so it is not surprising to see a traditional style Victorian nestled next to a log cabin, and a summer cottage jostled next to a Grecian style home. With four distinct seasons, Lake Minnetonka provides both summer and winter activities in the form of skiing - water and snow that is! Ice skating is a popular activity to be enjoyed November through April. Summer comes none to soon, bringing with it a blast of color and heat that is pleasant but never overwhelming. Residents enjoy the lake front and while away many a summer evening out on the water. Excelsior is one of the quieter neighborhoods that surrounds the Twin Cities, but is still close enough for one to commute comfortably, or to run into the "Cities" to enjoy an evening of culture or sports, or whatever takes your fancy.
