The New York Mills Regional Cultural Center and Arts Retreat is a unique little treasure found in small-town Minnesota.
Best known for hosting the “Great American Think-Off,” the cultural center is much more than the nationally recognized debate of armchair philosophers. Each year the center brings a wide variety of artistic culture to the region generally not found in rural Minnesota. The cultural center features literary events, including poetry and book readings, concerts, exhibits, discussion groups, workshops and art classes. The center seats an audience of about 125 for concerts and provides excellent acoustics for monthly musical performances, including blues, jazz, folk, classical and rock-and-roll. The cultural center, along with the NYM Arts Retreat, brings in artists from around the country to immerse in their artwork and experience life in rural Minnesota. The arts retreat was founded in 1989 as a way to expand the cultural and creative opportunities of rural Americans. In 1990 a historic brick building was donated and the City of New York Mills contributed $35,000 to convert the building into a cultural center. In 1992 the NYM Regional Cultural Center opened with a town parade, street dance and ribbon-cutting ceremony. A not-for-profit organization, the cultural center creates programming that strives to provide the community with the same arts opportunities as those in large metropolitan areas. Built to serve the town of New York Mills, the cultural center draws the bulk of its visitors from a 75-mile radius.
