Osakis considers itself a small, friendly, Christian community of just over 1,500 people, where the economic base is tourism, agriculture and light industry. Although Lake Osakis sprawls itself throughout the community offering an adventure all its own, the city maintains three city parks with a playground, sand volleyball courts, picnic tables and a community beach. Large green spaces afford passive recreation. Osakis' Central Avenue is filled with quaint locally owned stores adding a unique atmosphere to this touristy community. Shops filled with antiques, hand made quilts, and dolls, offer a fun afternoon of shopping. Don't worry, when lunchtime rolls around, you will have plenty to choose from. The Tip Top Dairy Bar offers cones, malts, and sundaes in addition to old-fashioned hamburgers. Whether you want a hearty lunch in a tearoom or a Mexican fiesta, your taste buds will be satisfied. There are also a handful of restaurants with beautiful waterfront views offering a more formal dining experience. Osakis does not disappoint with such a nice selection of offerings to choose from when it comes to a complete shopping and dining experience. Enjoying a reputation as a fisherman's haven, Osakis is proud to entertain vacationing families and boast a handful of other amusements in case the fish aren't biting. Miniature golf, go-carts and bowling are just a few of the "aim to please" activities here in Osakis. There are three movie theatres in nearby communities. As the boundaries of Osakis lie on both Douglas and Todd counties, there is certainly an array of interesting facts of historical significance waiting to be explored. The biggest claim to fame in Douglas County is the legendary Kensington Runestone. Discovered in a farmer's field in the late 1800's, many are convinced that these are the markings of Viking explorers in the fourteenth century, well before Columbus discovered America. It is because of this that some actually consider Minnesota the "birthplace of America". Todd County, situated geographically in the center of Minnesota has been deemed as a transitional area where the "eastern forest meets the western prairie". Osakis has its own school system for students in grades kindergarten through twelve. With state of the art facilities, pupils receive the best possible education from a team of well-qualified administrators, faculty and staff. Students excel in athletics as the schools offers sports such as football, baseball, softball, basketball, golf, tennis and more. The school also participates in the knowledge bowl, and offers a play every fall. In 1997, the Osakis Economic Development Authority was developed to promote economic development and thus improving the housing market. As a result, the housing market is steadily growing here in this community and houses are rather affordable. A cozy starter home with three bedrooms and one bathroom with a square footage of 913 square feet would start at $74,000. A split entry home on beautiful lake front property with four bedrooms and two bathrooms with over 1,900 feet of living space would be about $179,000. There is also much to choose from in the way of land property either facing the sparkling lake or nestled deep in the woods. It is easy to see why so many people flock to the lakes of Osakis annually to enjoy her pristine lakes, deep woods and community spirit. It is with open arms the residents welcome these visitors that cause the community to thrive. It is even with more excitement and energy that new residents are welcome to this vibrant city.
