Plymouth is a second-tier suburb that has seen tremendous population growth in the past two decades. Located 10 miles west of Minneapolis, its population has more than tripled since 1970. City population projections for the year 2000 are 65,000 and for the year 2010, 70,000. Needless to say, it is one of the faster-growing communities in the Twin Cities metro area. A large percentage of its residents earn upward of $75,000 annually. Average home sale price and income are higher than the Twin Cities area averages. The first inhabitants were the Wahpeton Sioux, making their encampment on the north end of Medicine Lake. Indian burial mounds can still be seen there. Medicine Lake is one of a dozen lakes in the city and was a major tourist attraction and resort area at the turn of the century. Antoine LeCounte, guide and explorer, was the first European settler in the Plymouth area arriving in 1848 and finally settling in 1852. The 36-square-mile city has a mix of residential, business and industrial space. Its rolling, wooded terrain features a 68-mile trail system that links parks, neighborhoods, commercial centers and schools. In addition, there are 38 parks and recreational areas and French Regional Park, a Hennepin County park. Elm Creek golf course is located in the northwestern corner of the city. The Plymouth News, a monthly city newsletter, is mailed to residents. City Council meetings can be viewed live on Northwest Community Cable Television channel 37.
