Sauk, Minnesota Until April 14, 1886, Sauk Rapids was on its way to becoming the center of a large metropolitan area. On that day, a rare cyclone hit the developing river valley town and destroyed everything in its path. Now Sauk Rapids is simply the close neighbor to the larger city of St. Cloud. Just across the Mississippi River from St. Cloud, Sauk Rapids lies nestled in between Highways 10 & 15. Sauk Rapids is small town with a big heart. A large majority of the residents are younger growing families. The town is relatively quiet and free of hustle and bustle. There are no major shopping centers, just a few shops sporadically placed along the towns main drag of Benton Drive and there is one huge grocery "superstore". Not having their own mega mall doesnt seem to bother residents of this small town; its just a few minutes into St. Cloud to all of the major stores. Some neighborhoods are rustic and historical and some are new and contemporary, both in varying price ranges. You wont find much in the way of apartments in this area. City officials had once thought that multi-family buildings would be good to boost the tax base. But they changed their course of action when they realized the traditional problems that arise with a dense, transient population. In Sauk Rapids, the five Protestant churches out number the one Catholic church, which differs from the historically predominant Catholic presence in this area. Sauk Rapids boosts numerous parks along the scenic Mississippi River. In the summer, Sauk Rapids is also host to the Benton County Fair. Sauk Rapids is located approximately one hour north of the Minneapolis/ St. Paul area and is conveniently located near major highways that will lead to the great north woods.
