Savage is a dynamic, rapidly growing community. So far, during the 1990s, the city's population has grown by 72 per cent. It's 1999 population is estimated to be at 17,400, which makes it the most populous city in Scott County. The city also ranked 2nd in the metro Twin Cities metro area for growth in 1998 and the growth trend through to the millennium will be steady. Parks are important to the residents of Savage. There are thirteen parks in and adjacent to Savage. Each year approximately 3,500 people participate in activities offered by the Parks and recreation department. These activities include trips, youth and adult athletics, special events, camps and playground activities. Savage is fortunate to be the home of two regional parks, Murphy Hanrehan Park Reserve, located in the southeast corner of the city, and the James Wilkie Sector of the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge (1,204 acres) located in the northwest corner of the city. The Savage community is served mainly by two school districts: Independent School District 191 (Burnsville, Eagan, Savage) and the Independent School District 719 (Prior Lake, Savage). Both districts offer extensive and award winning programs for all of the students they serve. Savage has one of the most active Chambers of Commerce in the area with over 75 members. It seeks to unite all business and professional people for the development and support of their business activities in the city of Savage.
