Holly Springs, Mississippi

When General Ulysses S. Grant pulled his Union army out of Holly Springs at the end of the Civil War, he spared the town the usual destruction and burning inflicted on other Confederate towns, preserving what is today one of the most impressive myriads of antebellum properties one can find. The streets of Holly Springs are lined with these majestic homes, built with a quality and taste virtually unknown at the time in Northern Mississippi. The homes are a symbol of the economic and cultural prosperity Holly Springs experienced in the early to mid 1800s as sons of aristocratic Virginia and Carolina families discovered the haven and sought its new opportunity. Homes include Daniel Baker House, originally a large log house built by Holly Springs founder William Randolph; Montrose, a brick mansion built in 1858; and the Mimosas, built while Holly Springs was still an Indian trading post. Though built by wealthy white planters, these old homes are a lasting monument to the skill of black carpenters and masons who contributed their labor as slaves.

If you like the great outdoors, you'll love what Holly Springs has to offer. Golfers come back again and again to Kirkwood National Golf Club, consistently ranked among the best golf courses to play in the South. Rolling hills and wooded valleys make all 18 holes of golf at Kirkwood memorable. Wall Doxey State Park, just seven miles South of Holly Springs, has camping sites and modern cabins, along with meeting and banquet facilities. Fishing is a top attraction at Wall Doxey's 60-acre Spring Lake. Chewalla Lake, five miles South of town on Chewalla Road, is another popular spot to fish and picnic. Dunn's Shooting Grounds has plantation-style quail hunts from October through March and sporting clays, fishing and corporate meeting facilities year-round.

The Holly Springs Garden Club hosts the second oldest pilgrimage in the state for three days each April, as costumed hosts show hundreds of visitors homes and churches listed on the National Register of Historic Places during the Holly Springs Pilgrimage. The hot days of summer bring forth the annual Kudzu Festival. Live entertainment, a carnival and arts and crafts highlight this July event. In the fall, music brings thousands to the North Memphis Street Blues and Gospel Festival. The October festival is held in memory of Junior Kimbrough and in tribute to R.L. Burnside. The third week of September each year is host to "Theatre Under the Stars." A cast of various repertory members present a three act production. After which there is dancing under the stars featuring renowned jazz bands and guest artists. Select historic homes and churches are open to the public in December each year for the Holiday Tour of Homes.
