Mississippi Real Estate & Relocation Guide
Meridian, Mississippi
Population: 39,968
Located in Lauderdale County
This community is a great place for young people, families and seniors alike. Big enough to have the amenities of a metropolitan center but small enough that neighbors are still neighborly and traffic congestion just doesn't exist. The weather's great (okay, it is humid in the summer) and the crime rate is the lowest of the largest cities in the state.
The City of Meridian was chartered in 1860 as an important rail center for trade, shipping, and industry. Presently, the downtown district is being reborn with an influx of new residents and businesses to the area. Many local retailers have remained downtown for over 100 years, establishing a strong foundation for others to follow.
Condominiums and apartments are being re-integrated into the district, leveraging new restaurants, shops, and multiple services. The city is filled with late 19th and early 20th century architecture. Meridian's downtown is centrally located and is quite large in comparison to the size of the surrounding community.
The catalyst for all new downtown development was the opening of Union Station on Front St. in 1997. Since its opening, downtown Meridian has been reborn with retail and residential newcomers. Union Station is a multi-modal station for Amtrak, Greyhound and the Meridian Transit Service.
Not far from Union Station is one of downtown Meridian's oldest occupants, the General Supply Store. It began selling to sawmillers in the area in 1913. After the Civil War, the store entered the plumbing, electric, heating and air conditioning businesses.
One of Meridian's most elegant historic buildings, the Rosenbaum Building is home to 14 spacious condominiums. This offers one and two bedroom units, spacious and airy, all with great views of the downtown area. Modern conveniences are the name of the game, will keeping the historical integrity of the building.
Meridian owns a 3,300-acre park situated on three lakes, which includes Long Creek Reservoir and Lakeview Golf Course. This beautiful, relatively primitive park features nature trails, jogging and walking track, horseback riding, picnic facilities, paddle boats, boat ramps and fishing.
Dunn Falls a 65-foot waterfall is located in Enterprise. This was once used as a power source for a gristmill and for the manufacture of Stetson hats. Historic Carrol Richardson Gristmill is open for tours. Area features include a natural wildlife refuge, picnic areas, barbecue grills, gristmill pond, hiking and swimming area.
Home prices will not bring sticker shock, we can guarantee it! A 1,000 square foot home with two or three bedrooms can sell for as little as $30,000! A larger home, with over 3,000 square feet, on an acre, with four bedrooms will only set the discerning buyer back $160,000.
What are you waiting for? Meridian is one of the prettiest, and most affordable areas in the state of Mississippi! With a great climate, and true southern hospitality, this is a wonderful choice for any family.
