In the heart of Jefferson County, located south of St. Louis County, and on the east side of the Mississippi River and the Illinois state line lies the town of Barnhart. This is a thriving community and is part of the St. Louis, Missouri-Illinois metro area. Barnhart is within close proximity of dining, entertainment, and employment opportunities, yet still retains a small-town feel. The city has grown over the past years with many new businesses and home developments. Businesses in the area include large national retailers, retail chains, manufacturers, and locally-owned shops. Education is of paramount importance to the residents of Barnhart and as a result the schools in the area are extremely well-funded and rate high on state and national scores. Continuing education is available from Jefferson College in Hillsboro, and from University Outreach and Extension, a joint venture between the University of Missouri and Lincoln University, which offers distance learning, online courses, and a variety of credit and non-credit classes. Other universities and colleges in the area include the University of Missouri - St. Louis, which offers a large number of undergraduate and graduate programs, and the Missouri Baptist University, which has a branch in Jefferson County, in the city of Hillsboro. Barnhart itself is a pretty town located near the river, and many homes in this area are built on at least an acre of land, most of them more. Homes are exceptionally reasonably priced, and many of them are very quaint. A modest three-bedroom home will start at $90,000.00. There are houses to suit every budget however, and there is currently new construction underway with large lots for sale at realistic prices. This is still a rural area although the population has increased since the town's inception - there are approximately 6,200 residents in this town and that number is steadily rising.
