De Soto's residents can enjoy a very safe, family-oriented environment with a mild, humid climate that invites year-round outdoor activities. De Soto is rich in history and proud of its heritage, with high value placed on education, safety and hard work. As it progressed, De Soto became known for its Artisian Wells, which bubbled throughout the town. De Soto has been nicknamed "Fountain City" because of these wells. In 1904 at the World's Fair in St. Louis (the "Louisiana Purchase Exposition"), water from these springs was bottled and sent by tank car where it was sold for five cents per cup. Housing options in De Soto include single family homes, apartments, duplexes, structured living arrangements for seniors; and all are in the right price range. You may choose from magnificent historic homes, attractive new homes, small country cottages, sprawling country estates, lake homes and everything in between. Residents are pleased to find a variety of homes, quality construction and affordable land prices. Throughout the area, homes range anywhere from a fixer-upper price to the price of "having it all." Subdivisions such as Meadowbrook, Hickory Hills and Towne View Estates offer in-town living with lots of varying sizes. Mount Olive, Weathered Stone and Kimberly Heights can provide the homebuyer with a more wide open country feel while still remaining within easy driving distance to everything. Summer Set and Valley Lake provide the lakefront setting. Homes both old and new are landscaped to perfection and stretch across the rolling hills of the city. The median price of a home in De Soto is between $80,000 and $100,000, which, when amenities and dollars are compared to St. Louis housing, means buying in De Soto makes sense and dollars! Under the mature trees lining Joachim Creek, there are benches, which provide an excellent place to come for quiet meditation and to enjoy the occasional heron or other wildlife. An enchanting gazebo located in the park is the perfect setting for weddings, concerts in the park and a variety of events held there. A great place for bird watching, there is a walking trail meandering through a Tree Museum, with trees traceable to 50 historic figures and events. Lighted pavilions are scattered throughout the park, with outdoor grills nearby, making a perfect place for family reunions or other festive gatherings. One of the largest events to be held here is the De Soto Fall Festival, where vendors come from all across the Midwest to enjoy a day filled with food, crafts, and endless entertainment. Nature at its best can also be found on the golf course. Cottonwood Golf Course is a 9-hole golf course surrounded by mature trees, with a 2,000 square-foot pro-shop and a screened deck overlooking the last hole. The golf course is bordered by a 65-acre lake community. Residents can ski, scuba dive, fish or ride jet skies on the pristine waters of Briarwood Lake Community. Gleaming bodies of water surround De Soto on many sides. Private lake communities such as Summerset Lake with its three lakes, the largest of which is just over 85 acres, are great for year-round recreation in your own back yard. Valley Lake is another lake community with a lake large enough to provide all the water sports you can imagine, as well as the opportunity to enjoy a nice cup of tea on the back deck overlooking a glistening body of water. Many residents have constructed their own private lakes upon the endless sprawling acres that surround our community. The De Soto community is served by three public school districts. De Soto schools are known for their innovative educational programs. Several elementary classrooms are piloting the demanding Saxon Mathematics Program. Junior high students develop critical thinking skills and study classic literature as part of the Junior Great Books Program. Technology is an important part of the learning process at all grade levels. Every district classroom has one or more computers with Internet access and there are at least two computer labs in each building. Students from all of these schools often begin their college career at Jefferson College, located just 15 minutes away from De Soto. Through Jefferson College programs, literally hundreds of public service workers have been prepared for their jobs.
