Located on the banks of the scenic Mississippi River is the city of Imperial, Missouri. Before World War I the town decided to change its name to Liberty to support the war effort. After the war was over, the town went back to the original name of Imperial. The Mastodon State Historical Site located in Imperial is one of the most important archaeological sites in Missouri. In the 1800's, this is the location where bones of mastodons where first found. Excavations through the 1900's revealed even better preserved bones. 1970, the citizens in Jefferson County believed it was extremely worthwhile to preserve this piece of history and a movement was made to secure the site. The Missouri DNR was able to purchase the 418 acres containing the bone bed in 1976, and the site was given the name Mastodon State Park. In 1996, the park was re-named Mastodon State Historical Site. Jefferson County is filled with beautiful parks with winding trails that afford wonderful opportunities for hiking, biking, rollerblading, or just to take a stroll after a long day. Many of the parks also provide a nature study building offering great educational opportunities to learn about the Missouri wildlife. If fishing is your sport of choice, you'll be happy to know that the entire length of the Big River in Jefferson County has been designated a Small Mouth Bass Trophy Area by the Missouri Department of Conservation. Many of these county parks are located along the Big River and several of them have concrete boat ramp access. Students living in Imperial may attend the high school of their choosing within the county. These students have achieved good ACT scores and over 50% of graduating seniors attend college or a university. Students in the elementary and middle schools have an array of opportunity available to them in the area of languages, science labs and even formal computer training beginning as early as kindergarten! St. Louis is located just 30 minutes from Imperial. While you are visiting, it is hard to miss the famous St. Louis Gateway Arch. There is so much more to this 630 foot portal, there is actually a host of activities for the entire family to enjoy while there. Perhaps one of the most exciting things to do at the arch is to take the tram ride up to the very top for an exhilarating view of the entire city. While taking the ride, you can choose your own adventure, either going back in time to the 1800's to the Lewis & Clark era or you can chose the opposite end of the arch and re-discover the late 1960's at the time the arch was being built. No matter your choice, the finale of the ride is the dazzling view of the beautiful city of St. Louis.
