Maryville, home of Northwest Missouri State University, has about 11,000 residents that enjoy college town life with community theatre, an aquatic center, an 18-hole championship golf course at Mozingo recreational Lake, Maryville Country Club, and active parks and athletic programs. Newcomers have described the rural setting, the people and the atmosphere as warm, friendly, open, and safe. People wave when they see you and numerous organizations give you the opportunity to become involved. Some enjoy the fact that there is usually no more than one stoplight between home and a grocery store. Schools include the University, public and parochial, a vocational/technical school, as well as an elementary lab school on the Northwest campus. Washington Middle School earned the distinction with the national "Excellence in Education" award. St. Francis Hospital and Health Services has just initiated an expansion program and along with Northwest Missouri State have been recognized at the state and national levels with quality awards.
