Population: 28,822 Located in St. Louis County
South St. Louis County covers a vast area, a great part of which is unincorporated. While settlement came early to the area through Spanish land grants, development was comparatively slow due, in part, to confusion over ownership after the Louisiana Purchase. Much of South County was hinterland surrounding the large rural farms which were clustered around crossroads settlements. South County was originally settled by French and Anglo settlers, but their large tracts of land were not developed until they were subdivided and turned into truck farms by German immigrants in the 1840s and beyond. Thus, surviving historic structures in the area are primarily of German origin. Parts of South County were completely undeveloped until the building boom which followed World War II, but today, the area is losing its rural character even at the southernmost edge. The Mehlville School District encompasses all or part of the unincorporated communities of Mehlville, Oakville, Concord and Lemay. This fully accredited district serves the educational needs of about 12,000 children in a growing community of more that 90,000 residents within a 44-square-mile area. St. Anthony's Medical Center opened at its present location on Tesson Ferry Road in 1975. The 794-bed facility, a level two trauma center, remains South County's only hospital today. It offers a broad continuum of health care services as well as strategic centers of excellence for childbirth, orthopedics, cancer, cardiology, behavioral health, hospice care and surgery. The Emergency Department logs more than 70,000 visits annually, has 44 treatment rooms and serves 10 ambulance districts. St. Anthony's also operates two separate urgent care facilities in South County. South County has a wide array of housing in plentiful supply. There are usually 180-190 homes on the market at any one time. |
