Republic, Missouri

Republic, Missouri began its existence as a typical crossroads station during the period from 1850 to 1860. Early settlers came from various Eastern states as Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia, bringing with traditions and customs peculiar to those states. Others came from New York, Illinois, Ohio, and Michigan. From the North and East they came, bringing their habits, beliefs, and customs. Many citizens of Republic today are direct descendants of these early families.

Republic began its educational and religious training almost from the beginning. The first school was a one-room structure located on West Elm Street one block west of the present Chevrolet Company. A two story brick one, which remained in use until the present elementary school was built in 1954, replaced this building. In 1920, the first high school was built. In 1937, a gymnasium was added to the high school.

Republic's proximity to the entertainment capital, Branson, Missouri, makes it a perfect place to live and commute. Located just 40 minutes away, Branson is the home to several nationally known stars as well as Silver Dollar City. Several lakes around the area also provide facilities for family type vacations, such as fishing, camping, and boating.

Missouri's single largest tourist attraction, Bass Pro Shop, is located in nearby Springfield.

Wilson's Creek National Battlefield, located just minutes east of Republic, is the location of the first Civil War battle west of the Mississippi. The visitor's center has a small theater, exhibits, and maps. A five-mile tour drive and trails allow complete access to the park. Moonlight trail rides are also offered during the year. Periodically, a Civil War reenactment is held at the park, which covers 1700 acres.

Republic is only minutes away from some of the finest cultural and recreational facilities, dining, and shopping and entertainment opportunities in the country. Art festivals, the symphony, ballet and theatre share the entertainment spotlight with jazz, historical sites, festivals and restaurants of all kinds.
