Savannah, Missouri
Population: 4,762
Located in Andrew County
Savannah, county seat of Andrew County, located just north of St. Joseph, is anything but a sleepy little town, even though it only has 4.762 residents. From the majestic Andrew County Courthouse in Town Square to the swimming pool in Messick Park to the baseball diamonds and tennis courts and Duncan Hills Golf Course, the community offers recreational opportunities that many larger towns would be hard-pressed to match. Savannah has undergone some major changes in the last decade or so, apart from growing larger, it had also revamped its downtown era, recalling to memory, a quieter time circa the late 1800's or the early 1900's. In order to achieve this new brick and concrete sidewalks around the square were added and period street lighting as well store signs reminiscent of the day were created. But that is not all! A new park for children 12 and under is under construction as well as four new baseball diamonds, four football and soccer fields. This is in addition to the already established Duncan Park and Clasbey Community Center, which features modern lighted tennis courts, multi-purpose courts, volleyball courts, walking/jogging trails, fishing lakes, along with baseball and softball fields. Then there is the Duncan Hills Golf Course. This city-owned and operated 18-hole course has everything to please even the most exacting golfer. For those who prefer a slightly less active pace, Savannah has wonderful home cooking from area restaurants that is just waiting to be sampled. Or how about shopping at antique shops and many other unique small businesses? Or come into the Andrew County Museum with its world's largest kewpie doll collection. Seeing that Savannah is located just north of St. Joseph, it has become a retreat for those who work in St. Joseph, but who want a quiet place to come home to at night, and they certainly find that here. Newcomers to Savannah are usually impressed by two features above all else: the trees and the homes. Savannah has been a Tree City USA for the last five years, preserving the current trees, and planting many new ones as well. Homes come in a variety of sizes and styles. Contemporary housing options are available for area residents; newer neighborhoods feature custom homes built by local developers and a variety of community living options such as town homes, condominiums, and two-family flats. Land is also available ranging in price from $10,000 to over $30,000. Homes range in price from $90,000 for a 1,100 square foot home with two or three bedrooms to over $400,000 for a custom built home. An average sized, 1,800 square foot home costs in the region of $220,000. The quality of any community depends of the character of its residents. And it is obvious the people of Savannah care! The warmth and friendliness of the country combined with the vitality of the city make Savannah a great choice for those who won't be satisfied with anything less than the best!
