Miles City, Montana

Population: 8,487
Located in Custer County

Miles City offers a rich cultural experience built around the vivid history of the “old west” and the immigration of farm pioneers from mid-America and western Europe. Being developed on the Yellowstone River, and the Northern Pacific Railroad coming early in its existence, the city developed as a regional hub for communities a hundred miles in all directions. From its inception, it has been a hub of activity and the source of culture for this extended area.

Historic District designations protect much of the turn-of-the-century downtown and inner-city neighborhoods. Much of the downtown still reflects the early western character of Montana and many other western states. Events such as the 50 year-old “Miles City Bucking Horse Sale” and Eastern Montana Fair feed into the western flair of this community.

Being a regional hub for southeastern Montana has also encouraged development of the arts. The Custer County Art & Heritage Center, the town’s premier art gallery, features two large art galleries and an alcove gallery with changing exhibitions throughout the year all housed in a unique historic setting next to the Yellowstone River and equipped with picnic area.

The Ranger Riders Museum features an extensive collection of western artifacts including more than 400 guns, some vintage cars, wagons and old farm equipment. Cavalry, Indian memorabilia and pioneer family pictures and costumes are also prominent in this museum.

The Wool House Gallery exhibits and sells old western prints, restored furniture, replica furniture and other gift items. Housed on their second floor is a railroad museum containing many artifacts and pictures from the old “Milwaukee Road” Railroad that brought many pioneers, businessmen, ranchers, farmers and all to this country in the early 1900’s.

Miles City also hosts a 9-hole golf course, a public library, community swimming pool, events such as a summer stock theater, bluegrass festival and some of the best hunting and fishing available anywhere. Outdoor recreation is both available and accessible throughout the area.

Montanans enjoy the best fishing in the country. In addition to our world-famous trout, anglers can hop to hook large and small mouth bass, northern pike, walleye, perch, crappie, catfish and ling. Custer County offers a wide variety of hunting year-round - from migratory birds such as duck and geese or upland game birds like pheasant, grouse and turkey, to our infamous deer and antelope. The Oasis is a fun place in the summer time for the children to be outdoors and go swimming. Public tennis courts are available on the West end of town near Denton Field.
