Most other recreational facilities are available at Omaha. Many lakes are nearby for fishing and boating. There is very successful hunting in nearby rural areas, such as La Vista and other outlying areas. Because of its great location, only a few minutes away from Omaha, Ralston is a great commuter town, or "bedroom community." This means it is also close to all the activities that Omaha offers. For instance, a trip to Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo is never boring. Here is the world's largest in-door tropical rain forest of its kind, America's largest free-flight aviary, the largest cat complex in North America and the largest salt water aquarium between Chicago and San Francisco. Museums exist for everyone, including the Western Heritage Museum, Great Plains Black Museum, Union Pacific Museum, Jewish and Czech museums and the El Museo Latino. Ethnic events include St. Stanislaus, La Festa Italiana, Santa Lucia, Cinco de Mayo, the Czech festival, Juneteenth, and a week-long African American festival. Since its organization in 1924, the Omaha Community Playhouse has become the largest community theater in the nation. Young Henry Ford, and Omaha native, performed in its second production, "Merton of the Movies." before going on to fame in Hollywood. Last century, industry in Omaha mostly meant soap and cigar factories, carriage makers, sawmills, windmills and hog-packing plants. Now Omaha is a center for high-tech industry. More than 800 companies in the area are engaged in technology as a business. Many of Omaha's high-tech companies are among the largest in the nation. This is also a great area if you are in the market to buy, or even rent a house, apartment or condo. With as little as $70,000 you can buy a 3 bedroom, 2 bath home that averages around 1,400 square feet. There are many choices available to the discerning buyer and you can spend upwards of $500,000 if that is in your budget!
