Topaz, Nevada

Located in Douglas County

Situated on the Nevada-California border is the scenic community of Topaz, Nevada. Right on Lake Topaz with a breathtaking view of the Eastern Sierra Mountains, the Topaz area provides an array of recreational activities. Lake Topaz itself is fed by the West Walker River, which has been designated as a Wild and Scenic River. At one point, the river actually drops 1,500 feet and the rushing water travels through 14 miles of a boulder filled canyon. Both the West Walker River and Lake Topaz boast excellent fishing beginning in April all the way through October.

Ranching is still an active centerpiece for life in the Topaz area; however, tourism is the main industry. Topaz entertains many visitors from Europe, the Pacific Rim and of course, our country's west coast. People come from all over to enjoy the dazzling mountains and breath in the relaxing lake air. The climate in this area is one of the most comfortable you will find anywhere in the States. The winters are moderate and the summers are a bit warmer with cool evening temperatures year round.

Because this community is positioned right on Lake Topaz, most residents enjoy the recreational activities the pristine lake water affords. Not only are the water activities popular, but also horseback riding into the mountains is a popular past time. If your looking for adventure that some only dream about, try packing into the rugged wilderness of the Sierra Mountains. Don't worry, guided tours are available in this tourist town!

The lake was formed by the diversion of water from the West Walker River through a feeder canal and the construction of an outlet tunnel in the rim of the lake. The water stored at Topaz serves the agricultural needs of Smith Valley and Mason Valley, and ends at Walker Lake near Hawthorne, Nevada. Wonderful Rainbow and German Brown trout are produced in Topaz Lake. Fishing season runs from January 1st through September. The area also offers bird and deer hunting.

Topaz is located in Douglas County and has much to offer residents in their daily lifestyle. The county has 2 well-stocked libraries and continues to add nearly 4,000 books every year. The county also boasts a swim center with 4 pools including one for small children and one for the elderly. The parks and recreation division offer several activities that focus on individual age groups from pre-school age to senior citizens. Douglas County is also home to Western Nevada Community College. The college offers a wide range of course study and students can achieve their 2 year associate degrees, 1 year certificate of achievement or take classes that transfer toward a bachelor degree.

Whether you are looking for a summer vacation home or a year round homestead, the Lake Topaz area can meet your needs. With rugged beauty and supreme quality of life, be sure to check out Topaz today!
