Hampstead, New Hampshire
Population: 8,297 Located in Rockingham County
Hampstead's rural setting, proximity to Boston (45 minutes), affordable land and low tax rate are attractive features for those who want to live in a rural community. Tree-lined streets highlight the center of town where the original high school, now the town office, colonial homes and Olde Meeting House are contrasted against the modern services of a bank, pharmacies and restaurants. The newer buildings have been carefully designed to blend with the old. With a population of just over 7,700, Hampstead was incorporated in 1719 with an area of 14 square miles. A board of 3 elected selectmen head the town government. Municipal services include full-time police, volunteer fire and rescue squad and public works. The current tax rate is $22.22 per thousand with a 103% assessed ratio. Housed in its present building since 1897, the fast growing library offers art and photo exhibits, children's workshops and free lectures. The elementary and junior high schools are a model for other communities. Pinkerton Academy in nearby Derry, NH services the high school population and is one of the largest secondary schools in New Hampshire noted for quality in both college preparatory and vocational education. Hiking trails, cross-country skiing and horseback riding - you won't find a better town for education and family organizations and activities.
